Session day prep is very important to the success of your newborn session. I suggest that babies feed right before coming into studio or arrive early and nurse in studio. That way we start the session with a well fed, hopefully sleeping from the car ride, baby. I like to start sessions with baby naked so leave baby in a diaper only and cover with blankets to keep warm. Socks, mittens, and hats are okay. Place burp cloths underneath the straps to protect baby’s belly. This way when you arrive, I do not have to wake the baby to undress him/her. It is very important to understand that I believe in baby led newborn sessions, which means that I never force or deny a feeding. In the event that the baby is fully fed, but still may seem hungry during the session, I will take a break and allow them private feeding time.
When you feed before a session, I suggest feeding as you normally do, whether breastfed or bottle fed. For bottle feeding, we do suggest you bring extra bottles. Moms are also welcome to pump at sessions if they need relief.
I also suggest that you try and not introduce anything new 24-48 hours before the session. If you are introducing a new formula, it is best to wait a full day to make sure there are no reactions to the formula before the session. Always consult your Pediatrician with any changes before your session. Prior to the session, I would love for you to share with me your favorite images for inspiration.
Keep in mind that while I do stock a ton of newborn items, some specialty items may not be available. For men/women in uniform- I suggest you bring your uniform and any accessories to use. For specialty baby uniform items or outfits, please ask in advance if we have those items. This is also true for specialty knit animal outfits,
props or other items.
Please bring the following
-pacifier
-spare diapers
-babys blanket
-extra bottles if bottle feeding
-any newborn keepsakes or special items you would like to use
If baby normally does not take a pacifier, please bring it just in case. Newborn sessions are new to your baby and they often want to self soothe by sucking more often than normal. Using a pacifier during a session will not encourage bad habits –I promise! I want you to be nice and relaxed during your session. Newborns generally
respond to your energy and therefore the more relaxed and comfortable you are the more chances of successful newborn session we can expect to have.
Every newborn client will receive an email the day before to remind them of these prep instructions. They are really just suggestions. When it comes down to it, you are their parent and only you know what’s best for them. These session day prep suggestions are what I have found to work best when preparing for your newborn session.

I am married to the love of my life who has recently retired from the Army. We are back “home” after being away for 21 years. We have 3 young boys and 1 daughter who is pursuing her college career. As a photographer, I specialize in the newborns and maternity portraits. I just love the amazing process of pregnancy and then having that sweet, new bundle of joy to love. Capturing all that is so important and I feel so blessed to be a part of this special time in my client’s lives.
