Maternity Model Call

Earlier this year I ran a model call for a maternity photoshoot. Candice is one of the  models who volunteered to participate in the model call. She contacted me about the session and I asked her if she would want hair and makeup for the session. She replied, “I’m not sure if I need a hair person because my hair has locks.” I pictured a person with very long hair twisted up in dreadlocks. So then, I wasn’t sure who was going to be knocking on the studio door for this model call.

When Candice walked in for her session I was so pleased to see this gorgeous woman before me with these cute little locks curled in her hair. I couldn’t wait to get started. 

Candice put on her favorite gown in my client closet to begin her maternity photoshoot. You can tell by the look on her face that she felt absolutely beautiful. This beautiful couture dress was provided by Katharina Hakaj Couture.

Maternity Set 1

We started with a full pink backdrop that flowed onto the floor. I had Candice stand there where the light was hitting her in the perfect way. I told Candice where to put her hands and how to pop her knee to accentuate her beautiful curves and her gorgeous baby bump.

To add some variety we added a sash and did some new poses. At times, I asked Candice to look at the light and at other times, I asked her to look down at her  baby bump. I also asked Candice to just close her eyes, put her hands on her belly, and think about the baby inside moving around and how soon that baby would be in her loving arms.

We wrapped up the pink set with a crown and Candice stated she absolutely loves crowns. She looks like the queen she was about to be for this little girl who was going to be born soon.

Photoshoot Set 2

After this part of the maternity photoshoot, we decided to have Candice put on a different dress that she liked from the maternity closet and I changed the backdrop to my flower backdrop with a different color floor.

Candice came out with this huge blue gown with so many ruffles. This was the first time I used this Couture dress. I was already used to posing people for pictures, however I had not had to pose a dress before and this was a lot of dress.

Candice and I worked together to move the dress in a way where we could still see her baby bump and her loving hands so that the dress was secondary to my gorgeous model.

All in all, my favorite part of this maternity photoshoot was the set with the pink couture dress. The blue dress was difficult but I learned some things about posing in this particular dress. I do love some of the pictures we were able to get from it. In the end, I changed the color of the dress to look better with the backdrop and I really feel that this purple tone looks so much better! BUT purple is my favorite color.

Maternity photoshoots can feel a lot like getting with your friends and playing dress up! For some pregnant women, this may be the only time during their pregnancy that they have felt absolutely beautiful. It’s almost like a tribute to the entire pregnancy because you’re so close to the end and you’re so ready for the baby! You get a little more me time before becoming a full-time mom.
