In Dora, AL, lives a couple preparing for one of life’s most beautiful journeys—parenthood. They visited my studio in Alabaster for a studio maternity session in Birmingham, marking the beginning of their visual story. Tia and D’Angelo, expecting their first baby, recently came in for a session (you can learn more about session options here) that turned into an artistic experience like no other. As a Birmingham maternity photographer, I was honored to bring their vision to life. This photoshoot, deeply inspired by Tia’s love for fine art, became a gallery I’m immensely proud of. Even after six years in the maternity photography business, it stands out as one of my favorite fine art maternity portraits to date.
Tia clearly expressed her vision for her maternity photos during our initial consultation. She came prepared with a Pinterest mood board that beautifully captured her desire for a fine art aesthetic. Styling a Fine Art Maternity Session
To build on the foundation we had laid, the mood board Tia curated provided perfect inspiration for our photoshoot. Therefore, our goal was to capture the delicate beauty of Tia’s pregnancy while also crafting images that could stand as works of art on their own. We worked with a few amazing vendors. Their creativity helped elevate the entire shoot.
Backdrop and Styling Choices for a Fine Art Look
For this setup, we chose a physical backdrop from Shades of Drops. This vendor is renowned for their exquisite backdrop designs that perfectly complement the fine art style. Therefore, we selected a backdrop with soft, muted tones that added a layer of sophistication to the images.
We used Savage seamless paper for other setups, which provided a clean and versatile base for the shoot. Also, to add a unique touch to these images, I edited in a digital texture from the Shades of Drops digital collection. This combination of physical and digital elements allowed us to create a cohesive yet varied gallery that captured the essence of Tia’s vision.
Behind the Scenes of This Maternity Session

With that, we started with some classic poses, highlighting Tia’s beautiful baby bump and the love between the couple. The soft lighting and carefully chosen backdrops created an atmosphere of tranquility, allowing Tia and D’Angelo to relax and enjoy the moment.

As the session progressed, we began exploring new poses and angles. Thus adding even more depth and variety to the session, drawing inspiration from the mood board while also allowing for spontaneous, candid moments. One of my favorite shots shows Tia in a delicate, flowing gown. She’s standing against the Shades of Drops backdrop. The ethereal quality of the image is enhanced by the subtle texture added during post-processing. Thus creating a piece that is both timeless and captivating.

Reflecting on the experience, I feel a deep sense of pride as I look back at the final gallery. The experience and the resulting images brought immense fulfillment. Furthermore, the images we created together are not just photographs; they are pieces of art that celebrate the beauty of motherhood and the love between Tia and D’Angelo.
