If you’ve been thinking about getting sitter session photos around 6–9 months, you’re right on track. This age is so much fun to photograph—your baby is full of personality, sitting strong, and (best of all) not quite fast enough to crawl away yet.
They’re expressive, joyful, and curious about everything. You’ll get giggles, bashful smiles, big wide eyes, and those sweet rolls that never last long enough. It’s a stage you’ll look back on and wish you could bottle up—and that’s exactly what these photos do.
Here’s one of my favorite images from a recent sitter session. This little one brought all the personality—and the pearls didn’t hurt either!
By this point, most babies are sitting confidently but aren’t yet on the move. That makes it the perfect window to capture a whole range of expressions without worrying about chasing them across the room. They’re alert, engaged, and really starting to show who they are—and you’ll see that shine through in every image.
We’re talking:
It’s truly a golden age—and it passes so fast.
Sitter session photos in the studio keep the focus on your baby and their personality. I keep the setup simple—soft textures, beautiful light, and a mix of soft or styled backdrops so your little one takes center stage.
You don’t need to worry about choosing the perfect outfit—simple pieces like a well-fitted onesie or classic baby romper always photograph beautifully. I’ll guide you on what works best for the session and the sets we plan to use.
“We have had a wonderful experience with Misty Dawn Photography! The pictures are priceless 💜 and they take their time to make sure your little one is happy.”

The best time to schedule a sitter session is when your baby can sit up steadily without support but isn’t crawling too quickly just yet. That’s usually somewhere between 6–9 months.
If you’re part of the Baby Plan, this session is already included, and we’ll plan it based on your baby’s development. If you’re booking a milestone session on its own, I recommend reaching out a month or two ahead of time so we can reserve your spot.
Curious about what to expect developmentally around this age? The CDC’s 6-month milestones give a great overview of what most babies are doing around the time we schedule sitter session photos.
If you want to know what’s included in a full Baby Plan experience (including three milestone sessions and product credit), take a look at The Baby Plan: Baby Photography in Birmingham.
Or, if you’re still figuring out the best time to start, this post walks you through each stage of the first year.

I am married to the love of my life who has recently retired from the Army. We are back “home” after being away for 21 years. We have 3 young boys and 1 daughter who is pursuing her college career. As a photographer, I specialize in the newborns and maternity portraits. I just love the amazing process of pregnancy and then having that sweet, new bundle of joy to love. Capturing all that is so important and I feel so blessed to be a part of this special time in my client’s lives.
